  As night falls, the colorful neon lights come to life. In the bustling metropolis at night, the lights shine brightly, staying on all night like daylight!

 We enjoy the illumination and travel in the prosperous city, all thanks to the development of LED technology.

 LED, a semiconductor that can convert electrical energy into visible light, is known in China as the "light-emitting diode." LED was born in the early 1960s, but its light output was dim and it was not widely applied at that time.

With the improvement of LED technology and processes, by the end of the 20th century, LEDs began to be widely used in electrical products. Due to the limited brightness of LEDs at that time, they could not be used for general lighting and were primarily employed for signage and indicator purposes. However, by the 21st century, with the advancement of technology, the luminous brightness of LED bulbs greatly increased. Thanks to their long lifespan, energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, excellent color rendering, instant startup, safety, and reliability, LEDs have been widely adopted across various industries.

In recent years, the application of LEDs has experienced rapid and prosperous growth. From 2010 to 2016, the penetration rate of LEDs in various markets saw significant increases. With the reduction in LED costs, price drops, and policies phasing out incandescent bulbs, the Chinese LED market developed rapidly. By 2015, the penetration rate of LED lighting had reached 32%, signaling a strong trend toward LEDs replacing traditional lighting as the mainstream light source. By 2016, according to LEDinside, the market penetration rate of LEDs in Southeast Asia was expected to reach 41%, with China being a major exporter of LEDs to Southeast Asia, showcasing the vast potential of the LED market.Currently, most LED lights are primarily used in building exterior lighting, landscape lighting, signage and indicator lighting, indoor display lighting, entertainment venues and stage lighting, as well as vehicle indicator lights.The significant improvement in LED technology lies in the increase in LED power. However, this increase in power also brings about the issue of heat dissipation. Traditional heat dissipation methods use thermal silicone grease to transfer heat from the chip substrate to the housing, with mechanical fixation using screws. The use of traditional thermal silicone grease for heat dissipation is complex and also increases labor costs and reduces production efficiency.To address the heat dissipation problem in LEDs, 3M provides thermal adhesive tapes as a solution. This solution is more convenient and easier than traditional thermal silicone grease assembly, while still maintaining its effectiveness.

So, why can 3M thermal adhesive tape conduct heat? Let's take a look at the structure of 3M thermal adhesive products:

 The most commonly used thermal adhesive tape for LEDs from 3M is the 3M Thermal Tape 6682. The 3M Thermal Tape 8862 is a high thermal conductivity tape, offering strong adhesion and long-lasting bonding strength. It does not require water, solvents, or thermal activation for use; only pressure needs to be applied during the application process. This tape is suitable for various applications that require both heat conduction and adhesion. Specific applications include:

Precautions:

Pay attention to the lamp base, especially whether the ceramic surface is smooth or has oil stains, as the flatness of ceramic surfaces is not ideal due to processing limitations.

Currently, most manufacturers of such lamps are using thermal silicone grease products.

Application 2:

Bonding of flexible circuit board light strips. This application is more suitable for using thermal adhesive tape, as using thermal silicone grease would make the process much more difficult.

Application 3:

Improve different models of thermal conductive tapes for varying thermal conductivity rates. Used for the connection and heat conduction between electronic product chips and heat sinks, suitable for small power chips with relatively low heat generation.

Application 4:

Bonding and heat conduction of LED light bars in electronic products and home appliances.

Precautions:

The application is generally the same as bonding rigid light strips, but customers in the industry have higher demands for the ease of handling the tape.

Since the light bar is relatively long, the tape itself must have a certain degree of resistance to bending rigidity.

2. Some customers have rework requirements, so the tape can be peeled off and re-applied if it is not aligned properly the first time.

In addition to its application in LED heat conduction, 3M adhesives are also widely used in the bonding of light box modules with various materials.

Especially in bonding low surface energy materials and substrates, such as LSE materials, plastics (PET, PVC, ABS), and metals (aluminum, copper).

Recommended: 3M VHB 5952 foam double-sided tape, with a full acrylic structure and extremely strong adhesion.

Application: 3M 5952 foam double-sided tape in the bonding application of Osram LED chips.

3M 5952 foam double-sided tape, with excellent initial tack, effectively bonds low surface energy materials, providing strong and stable adhesion performance.

For long-term outdoor use, such as LED vehicle lights, advertising light boxes, and display lights in commercial areas, it has excellent weather resistance, high and low temperature resistance, and long-term UV resistance and anti-aging properties.

It adheres well to curved surfaces, can fill uneven surfaces, sealing out moisture and most solvents; its unique backing is also suitable for various surfaces and low-temperature applications.

In the LED manufacturing process, adhesive applications in LED packaging face challenges, such as LED yellowing, bubble formation, and resin migration.

If the adhesive quality is not up to standard, during the packaging process, high baking temperatures or prolonged exposure can lead to LED yellowing, or a short curing time of epoxy resin can cause incomplete curing and adhesive cracking, all of which affect the quality of LED packaging.

To address these issues, 3M recommends the 3M DP1009 structural adhesive, which solves the heat resistance problem of traditional epoxy resins.

3M DP100 Structural Adhesive, in LED applications, is mainly used for bonding and sealing spherical light bulbs;

It is used for bonding difficult materials, such as bonding LEDs with ABS materials;

It is also used for bonding PMMA and stainless steel for LED light signs, requiring a transparent structural adhesive solution with strength.

The research and innovation in 3M adhesives provide more effective industry solutions for the widespread use of LEDs and improving production efficiency, playing a crucial role.

The development of 3M adhesives has accelerated the widespread application and mass production of LEDs, which, to some extent, reduces LED production costs, contributing indispensable support to the prosperous development of the LED market.
